A Tribute to Waffles: Our Journey Together

It’s with a heavy heart that I share the story of our beloved Waffles, who crossed the Rainbow Bridge recently. Waffles was more than just a hedgehog; she was a cherished member of our family who brought endless joy and comfort to our lives. Today, I want to honor her memory by sharing her story with you.

Waffles’ Arrival Waffles came into our lives as a rescue, a little ball of quills that had been through more than her fair share of hardships. When she first arrived, she was shy and reserved, but with time, patience, and love, she began to open up to us. My daughter, Charlotte, played a big role in socializing Waffles, making sure she felt safe and loved in her new home. Watching their bond grow was one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever witnessed.

Our Time Together Waffles had her quirks, as all hedgehogs do. She loved exploring during playtime, especially when she had free reign on the desk. Those little moments when she would poke her head out from behind a book or curiously sniff around the edges of the keyboard are memories that will forever be etched in my heart. Waffles was always full of surprises and never failed to bring a smile to our faces.

The Final Days This past weekend, Waffles began to decline. She stopped eating and drinking, and it became clear that her little body was shutting down. For 48 hours, we watched over her, hoping for a miracle, but knowing deep down that it was time to let her go. Saying goodbye was one of the hardest things we’ve ever had to do, but we knew it was the right thing for her.

Gabby’s Comfort Even our dog Gabby sensed the sadness in the house. She’s been glued to me, offering comfort in the way only pets can. It’s amazing how they just know when we need that extra bit of love.

Crossing the Rainbow Bridge As I reflect on Waffles' life and the love she brought into our home, I find solace in the words of the Rainbow Bridge poem:

“Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water, and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor;
Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again,
Just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing;
They each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance.
His bright eyes are intent; his eager body begins to quiver.
Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet,
You cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again.
The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head,
And you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together…”

In Loving Memory Waffles may no longer be with us in body, but her spirit will forever remain a part of our family. She taught us so much about resilience, love, and the joy that comes from caring for those who need it most. We’ll miss her dearly, but we take comfort in knowing that she’s no longer in pain and that one day, we’ll meet again.

Until then, sweet Waffles, run free across the Rainbow Bridge.
