Can You Train a Hedgehog to Use a Litter Box?

Absolutely! Hedgehogs are intelligent little creatures, and with some patience and consistency, they can be successfully litter-trained.

How to Litter-Train Your Hedgehog

Since hedgehogs are small, they don’t require much space for their bathroom habits. A kitty litter box or even a low-sided Tupperware container works perfectly for them.

  1. Set Up the Litter Box: Start by placing the litter box in your hedgehog's enclosure, filled with absorbent material. I recommend using paper towels that are free of bleach or dyes. If you prefer not to use paper towels or fleece, look for a low-dust litter that doesn’t contain clumping agents, as these can be harmful to hedgehogs.

  2. Choose the Right Spot: Position the litter box away from your hedgehog's food and water area to encourage them to use it. You can even place their wheel inside the box to pique their curiosity.

  3. Daily Maintenance: Dedicate a small scoop and rubber gloves for this task. You’ll need to scoop up your hedgehog's poop daily and place it in the same spot in the litter box. Keeping the rest of the enclosure clean is essential, as it helps your hedgehog learn where to go.

  4. Consistency is Key: Remove old poop daily and always put the fresh droppings in the same spot. Once your hedgehog consistently uses the litter box, you can gradually ease up on this routine.

  5. Regular Cleaning: Clean the litter box regularly to prevent odors and maintain your hedgehog's health. A clean environment is crucial for their well-being.

Be Patient!

It may take several days or even weeks for your hedgehog to start using the litter box, so don’t lose hope! Keeping their space clean and providing occasional baths when necessary is vital for their health. With time and patience, your hedgehog will learn to use the litter box just like any other pet!
