🦔 10 Things You Might Not Know About Hedgehogs
We all know hedgehogs are adorable. But did you know they’re also full of quirky habits, surprising traits, and fascinating biology? To close out April, I thought it’d be fun to share some lesser-known facts about these little prickly potatoes we love so much.
Whether you’re a new owner or a longtime hedgie fan, you just might learn something new!
1. 🧼 They Self-Anoint
When a hedgehog encounters a new smell or taste, they sometimes lick it, foam at the mouth, and rub that foam all over their back. It looks weird, but it’s totally normal—and it’s called self-anointing!
2. 👣 They Only Have 4 Toes on Their Back Feet
Yup, while they have five toes on their front paws, hedgies only have four on each back foot. It’s one of their many adorable little quirks.
3. 💤 They Can Hibernate (But Shouldn’t!)
In the wild, some species do hibernate, but domestic hedgehogs should never hibernate. If your hedgie gets too cold, they may try, and it’s very dangerous. Keep those temps between 75–80°F.
4. 🛌 They Sleep… A LOT
Hedgehogs are nocturnal, but they don’t just sleep during the day—they can clock 18+ hours of rest on a lazy day. Let them snooze!
5. 🧠 They’re Smarter Than You Think
They can recognize your voice, scent, and even routines. Over time, many hedgies learn when it’s treat time, bonding time, or “nope, not today” time.
6. 💩 They’re… Not Modest
Hedgies have zero shame about where they go—on your lap, in the bonding bag, during a cuddle session. It’s part of the deal 😅
7. 🧀 They’re Lactose Intolerant
No milk or cheese, no matter how cute they look begging for a snack! Stick to insect-based treats, veggies, or vet-approved options.
8. 🚨 They Can Be Very Quiet When Sick
Because they’re prey animals, hedgehogs tend to hide symptoms. Any subtle behavior changes can be a big deal—stay observant!
9. ✂️ Their Nails Need Regular Trimming
Those tiny toes need attention! Long nails can cause discomfort or even injury if not maintained.
10. ❤️ They All Have Unique Personalities
Some are sassy (👑 Aurora), some are snuggly (💛 Peanut), and some fall somewhere in between. Just like people, they each come with quirks, preferences, and charms of their own.
