🕊️ What Amore Taught Me About Being a Hedgie Parent

Losing Amore was one of the hardest things I’ve experienced—but today, I want to honor her memory by sharing what she taught me about love, patience, and the incredible joy of being a hedgie parent.

After nearly 20 years away from owning hedgehogs, Amore was the one who brought that spark back into my life. She was the sweetest, tiniest little bundle of quills, and from the moment she came home, she reminded me why I fell in love with these prickly companions in the first place.

Before she arrived, my husband and I dove into research—we wanted to do everything right. From cage setups to enrichment activities, diet, bonding, and more, we were determined to give her the best life possible. And in turn, she gave us everything.

Amore had a soft spot for pinky mice (her absolute favorite treat), and she could run for hours on her wheel with the biggest determination. She adored her snuggle bag, curling up for cozy bonding time, and had a special love for exploring my desk—curious and brave, she always had to see what I was up to.

But more than that, Amore taught me that prickly pets can love deeply. Her little grunts and sleepy sighs as she cuddled, the way she’d peek out just to be near me… it reminded me that love doesn’t always come in fluffy packages. Sometimes, it’s a tiny hedgehog with curious eyes and a big heart.

Because of her, my passion for hedgehogs was reignited. She reminded me that these little creatures are more than pets—they’re companions, healers, and quiet teachers.

To anyone just beginning their hedgie journey: cherish every little sound, every bonding moment, every quirky habit. They have more love to give than you might expect, and if you’re open to it—they’ll teach you so much.
