🦔 5 Things I Do Every Day for My Hedgehogs

Posted May 18, 2025 | Quick Care Tips

Hedgehogs might be small, but their needs are very real—and caring for them means showing up every day with attention, love, and just a little routine.

Over time, I’ve built a simple daily rhythm that helps keep my hedgehogs healthy, happy, and stress-free. These aren’t big, fancy tasks—just a few mindful moments that make a big difference in their lives.

Whether you’re a new hedgie parent or just want to fine-tune your routine, here are 5 things I do every single day for my quill-covered companions:

🥣 1.

Fresh Food + Water

Every morning (and sometimes in the evening too), I refresh their food and water bowls. Hedgehogs thrive on consistency, so I make sure:

  • They always have access to fresh, clean water

  • Their food is topped off or swapped out for a fresh portion

  • I check for uneaten food and remove any soft treats that could spoil

This also gives me a great chance to monitor their appetite and spot any early signs of illness.

🧼 2.

Wheel Wipe Down

If you’ve ever had a hedgehog, you know: that exercise wheel gets gross fast.

Each day, I do a quick wipe-down with a damp cloth or pet-safe wipe to remove any waste or buildup. It’s a simple task that helps:

  • Keep odors down

  • Prevent bacteria or fungal issues

  • Encourage consistent wheel use

Bonus: it’s also a check-in to make sure they’re still using the wheel—which is a good sign of overall wellness.

🌡️ 3.

Temperature Check

Hedgehogs are extremely sensitive to temperature changes, and drops below 72°F can lead to dangerous hibernation attempts.

Every day, I check the thermometer and make sure:

  • The enclosure stays between 74–78°F (23–26°C)

  • The heat source (usually a ceramic heat emitter with thermostat) is working properly

  • There are no drafts or sudden cold spots

This quick check brings peace of mind and protects their health.

🛏️ 4.

Hideout + Bedding Check

I gently peek into their snuggle hut or fleece liner to check for:

  • Soiled bedding

  • Uneaten treats

  • Any signs of abnormal waste or injury

I don’t disturb them if they’re deep asleep, but this soft check-in ensures their sleeping area stays clean and cozy.

A Moment of Presence

Sometimes it’s a little cuddle.

Sometimes it’s just me softly talking while I tidy their enclosure.

Sometimes it’s letting them sniff around during a supervised “out-of-cage” moment.

No matter what it looks like, I take at least one intentional moment to connect with them—because hedgehogs may be solitary animals, but they still thrive when cared for consistently and gently.

✨ Daily Routine = Daily Wellness

These five simple habits keep my hedgehogs healthy, help me catch small problems before they become big ones, and remind me that even tiny pets deserve thoughtful care.

If you’re building your own hedgehog routine, start small. A few mindful steps each day go a long way in creating a happy, thriving life for your little one.
