🩺 Ask an Exotic Vet: Top 5 Questions I Hear Working in the Industry
One of the best parts about working in the veterinary field is the access to incredible knowledge—especially when it comes to exotic pets like hedgehogs. And with two exotic specialists at the clinic I work at, I’ve picked up so much valuable info over time.
Today I’m sharing the top 5 questions I hear from new or worried hedgie parents—and what the experts say in response.
1.
“Do hedgehogs really need exotic vets?”
Short answer: YES.
Hedgehogs have unique physiology, dietary needs, and health risks that regular small animal vets may not be trained to handle. An exotic vet will know how to spot early warning signs, perform safe exams, and recommend the right care based on their specialized knowledge.
2.
“How often should I take my hedgehog in for a checkup?”
Even if your hedgie seems healthy, a yearly wellness exam is a great idea. Just like with dogs or cats, routine checkups help catch issues early—before they become serious.
Pro tip: Establish care with a vet before an emergency hits. That way, your hedgie has a record and is already familiar with the clinic.
3.
“What are common health issues to watch for?”
Here are a few red flags that mean it’s time to call your vet:
-
Lethargy or not eating
-
Diarrhea or changes in stool
-
Sneezing, wheezing, or nose discharge
-
Dragging a limb or wobbly walking
-
Sleeping outside their usual hide
-
Sudden weight loss
Don’t ignore subtle changes—hedgies are experts at hiding when they’re sick.
4.
“Is it okay to wait and see?”
This one is tricky. The short answer? No.
Hedgehogs can crash fast once symptoms appear. Early intervention can mean the difference between a quick recovery and something more serious. If you’re ever unsure, call your vet and describe what you’re seeing—they’ll guide you.
5.
“What do I need to bring to a vet visit?”
When heading to a vet appointment, make sure to:
-
Bring your hedgehog in a secure, ventilated travel carrier
-
Include a familiar blanket or fleece for comfort
-
Pack a small sample of their usual food
-
Take notes about symptoms, dates, or behaviors you’ve noticed
Bonus tip: A warm rice sock or heating pad on low can help keep them cozy during travel!
Final Thoughts:
Veterinary care can be intimidating—especially if you’ve never worked with an exotic vet before. But it doesn’t have to be. With the right support, education, and confidence, you can be an amazing advocate for your hedgehog’s health.
