🪺 Build a Better Dig Bin: Hedgehog Fun in 5 Minutes

Want to give your hedgehog a super easy, super fun enrichment activity that they’ll love and that only takes five minutes to set up? Say hello to the dig bin.

It’s one of the best ways to tap into your hedgie’s natural instincts—sniffing, burrowing, foraging—and it adds a big boost to their daily stimulation.

🧺 What You’ll Need

  • A shallow plastic bin or box (low sides, easy access)

  • Fillers like:

    • Shredded paper

    • Paper crinkle filler

    • Fabric scraps or fleece strips

    • Aspen or paper bedding

  • Hidden goodies (optional):

    • Mealworms or favorite treats

    • Sparkle balls or small toys

    • Herbs like dried lavender or chamomile

🛠️ How to Set It Up

  1. Line the bottom with a washable liner or towel (optional, for easy cleanup)

  2. Add 2–4 inches of filler

  3. Bury a few toys or treats

  4. Place the bin inside their playpen or supervised area

  5. Let the digging commence!

Peanut loves a crinkle paper + sparkle ball combo. Aurora? She’s more about fleece strips and sneaky snack discoveries. Find what works for your hedgie’s vibe!

🔁 How Often Should You Rotate?

To keep it interesting, I recommend:

  • Refreshing filler once a week

  • Rotating toys/treats every 2–3 days

  • Doing a deep clean once every 1–2 weeks

The goal is to keep it feeling new and engaging without overwhelming them with change.

💡 Why It Matters

Hedgehogs are naturally curious and love to forage. A dig bin helps:

  • Reduce boredom and stress

  • Encourage healthy activity

  • Prevent cage rearranging chaos (unless you’re into that chaos… I get it 😄)

Plus, it’s a fun way to watch their unique personalities shine through.
