🍼 What to Expect in Your First Month With a Hedgehog

Bringing home a hedgehog for the first time is exciting—but let’s be honest, it can also be a little overwhelming. They’re tiny, prickly, and full of quirks, and no matter how much research you do (and trust me, I did a lot), there are still surprises.

So, whether you’re preparing for your first hedgie or just brought one home, here’s a real-talk guide to what your first month might look like—and why it’s okay if everything doesn’t go perfectly.

Week 1: The Quiet Adjustment

Your new hedgehog is going through a lot—new home, new smells, new people. During this time, they might:

  • Stay in their hide most of the day

  • Refuse to eat for a day or two

  • Huff, click, or ball up when you get close

  • Poop a lot during bonding attempts (hello, stress poop!)

Tip: Give them space to adjust. Offer gentle presence—sit near their enclosure, talk softly, and introduce your scent with a worn t-shirt or blanket.

Week 2: Beginning to Explore

As they start to feel more secure, your hedgie may:

  • Begin emerging earlier in the evening

  • Show curiosity when you approach

  • Allow brief handling (with a bonding bag or fleece liner!)

  • Recognize the sound of food or treats đź‘€

This is a great time to establish a basic routine—feeding, bonding, light cage cleaning—consistency builds trust.

Week 3: Testing Boundaries

By now, you might think you’ve got a groove—until they randomly huff again or poop mid-snuggle.

Totally normal. Hedgehogs are individuals, and bonding isn’t always linear. You might have good days and “nope” days. Peanut was all snuggles by week three. Aurora? She was still giving me side-eye and attitude.

Stay consistent. Keep trying.

Week 4: Building the Bond

This is when you may really start to see the bond forming:

  • They climb into your lap without panic

  • They sniff you curiously instead of huffing

  • You catch them playing or exploring on camera

  • They might even let you trim a nail or two!

Every hedgie moves at their own pace. Some bond fast, others take weeks or months. What matters most? Showing up every day with love, patience, and gentle care.

Final Thoughts:

The first month is all about learning—for both of you. Don’t stress over perfection. You’re doing great. Let your hedgie be your guide, keep a watchful eye on their health and comfort, and celebrate the small wins (like the first time they don’t huff).

If you’re just starting your hedgehog journey—welcome. You’re in for the quirkiest, cutest ride.
